Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization is a skilled intervention for treating soft tissue restriction. It is applied using specific instruments with beveled edges that manipulate the layers of skin, muscles, fascia, and tendons using compressive techniques. These instruments help your therapist effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue that may exist between the layers of tissue. This technique is especially useful in breaking adhesions that may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, strain, or guarding. The goal is to restore full, normalized soft tissue mobility.

IASTm is intended to produce the following effects:

  • Improved range of motion
  • Improved contractile strength
  • Improved pain perception
  • Decreased scar tissue
  • Reduced pain
  • Improved function
  • Improved tissue healing
  • Improved circulation
  • Decreased adhesions
  • Decreased fascial restrictions
