Do you find yourself wondering if your child fits under the umbrella of types of kids that we see for therapy here at Kids Perspective? Luckily, the answer is yes! At Kids Perspective every child is unique, and we can formulate a program just for them.

what is toe walking?

Toe walking can develop in your child for a variety of reasons including decreased flexibility in calf muscles, weakness in the front of the leg, sensory sensitivities on the bottom of the foot, or underlying neurological or musculoskeletal conditions. Consistently walking on the balls of your feet is an atypical gait pattern. It is important to find the source and address toe walking sooner than later to prevent long-term physiological changes. When learning to walk, kids may go through phases where they spend some time on their toes. This is normal as long as their gait pattern returns to baseline after a few weeks.

contributing factors to toe walking:

  • Decreased flexibility in the calf muscles
  • Weakness in the front of the leg
  • Sensitivities on the bottom of the foot

how can physical therapy help if my child walks on their toes?

In certain instances, Toe Walking will resolve on its own. When it persists, Toe Walking can lead to permanent physical changes in joints and muscles. This can contribute not only to pain later in life but also can cause balance and coordination impairments, making it difficult for your child to keep up with their peers during physical activities and play. In this case, physical therapy is a very important tool. During a typical PT session, activities to address Toe Walking can be disguised as games or other fun activities to keep your child engaged.
