walking

Is your child is having trouble walking? You’ve landing on the right page, and we are here to help!

Several factors contribute to walking such as muscle strength, coordination and balance. Low muscle tone, poor balance, leg stiffness, and delays in crawling and other foundational skills can cause difficulties while learning to walk.

Children of all ages may demonstrate motor abilities at a lower age equivalency. Pinpointing these delays is the first step in the therapeutic journey of bringing your child back on track with their peer.

Are you worried that your child isn’t walking?

It’s always exciting when a child starts walking. This typically occurs anywhere from 10-14 months, but there is variation within these parameters. Several factors impact walking such as muscle strength, coordination, and balance. Activities such as tummy time, rolling, crawling and creeping all help with building the functional strength needed to walk. Personality factors including motivation to move and explore can also contribute.  Walking is a new and exciting way for your child to become more independent while discovering their environment. This not only positively impacts them physically but stimulates learning and cognition.

What could be contributing to my child not walking?

  • Low muscle tone
  • Poor balance
  • Leg stiffness
  • Delays in crawling and other foundational skills
  • Child preference to be carried
  • Underlying neuromuscular conditions
