Down syndrome

Most children who have down syndrome take longer to meet developmental milestones because of their low muscle tone (hypotonia) and looseness of ligaments. Pediatric physical therapists help children who have Down Syndrome to improve and maintain strength and muscle memory so they can complete their everyday skills independently. Because children with down syndrome develop and grow at a slower rate than their peers, they may experience some delays in their self-care skills. Pediatric physical therapists assist in teaching their patients how to get dressed, feed themselves, and use the bathroom.

how can my child with down syndrome benefit from physical therapy?

Most children who have down syndrome take longer to meet developmental milestones because of their low muscle tone (hypotonia) and looseness of ligaments. Pediatric physical therapists help children who have Down Syndrome to improve and maintain strength and muscle memory so they can complete their everyday skills independently. Families are given education to easily help their children at home. The milestone skills that are given special attention include; crawling, sitting, walking, pulling to stand, balance, and play activities. Because babies with down syndrome develop and grow at a slower rate than their peers, they may experience some delays in their self care skills. Pediatric physical therapists assist in teaching their patients how to get dressed, feed themselves, and use the bathroom.

how to tell if your child has low muscle tone:

  • Their joints are overly flexible
  • Poor posture
  • They grow tired quickly (because their muscles require extra effort to be activated)
  • Low strength
  • Limp appearance when being picked up (in babies), may feel like they might slip through your hands
  • Delays in movement patterns (rolling, crawling, walking, etc.)

what should i do if i think my child needs help?

While babies, kids, and adults with down syndrome may take longer to develop or perform a task, they are still capable of being independent and reaching their full potential! Pediatric physical therapist goals are to empower their physical skills and celebrate all their abilities. Remember that skill development is a continuum and not all children develop at the same pace. Always trust your gut as a parent and check in with your pediatrician any time you are concerned about your child’s development. There isn’t a faster way to improve movement and mobility than by going to see a pediatric physical therapist.
