what are torticollis and plagiocephaly?

Torticollis is a shortening of a neck muscle called the Sternocleidomastoid, that causes a “head tilt” and rotation to a preferred side. This can develop in-utero due to decreased space during growth.

Plagiocephaly is a flattening of the head that can happen due to a variety of reasons such as: positioning while in utero, positioning or devices used during delivery, spending extended time laying on a flat, hard surface, or having a preference to turn to a single side.

signs of torticollis:

  • Tilt of the head with chin pointing in the opposite direction
  • Preference to look in one direction over the other
  • Flattening at the back of the head
  • Like to breastfeed only
  • Difficulty with rotating head and neck through full range of motion
  • Small bump in the SCM muscle

what do i do if i think my child needs help?

There isn’t a faster way to improve a baby’s head posture than by going to see a pediatric physical therapist. Getting to see a hands-on specialist PT means you’re going to get very fast access to care that will soothe and relax those tight muscles, loosen and lubricate stiff, stuck and painful joints, and strengthen your baby’s body so they can develop and achieve their milestones with symmetry. You can often leave a good physical therapist with a greater understanding, concerns eased and improvement noted, all within 60 minutes.
